OC Roundtable with the RSO Indigenous Advisory Council
The 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action call upon Canadians to “renew or establish Treaty relationships based on principles of mutual recognition, mutual respect, and shared responsibility for maintaining those relationships into the future” (Call to Action #45iii).
What might such a relationship between Canadian orchestras and Indigenous peoples look like? What needs to be in place for an orchestra to engage in these relationships respectfully, reciprocally, and sustainably? The Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) at the Regina Symphony Orchestra, created in 2017, offers one example.
Join Orchestras Canada on Wednesday, March 3rd (1:00-2:00pm EST) for a candid roundtable presentation with members of the IAC, hosted by the chair of OC’s Equity Committee. We will explore how the partnership between the IAC and the Regina Symphony came to be, the relationships and cultural contexts at the heart of it, and important considerations for orchestras when engaging in their own relationships with Indigenous peoples.
