While the award is traditionally presented in person, this year required rethinking the tradition, and the award announcement was made through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1BfPLZLJZ1w\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this video<\/a>, which celebrates Yannick\u2019s involvement and music making with\u00a0several Canadian orchestras from coast-to-coast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Prix Betty Webster Award 2020\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1BfPLZLJZ1w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Betty Webster Award is presented each year to an individual or organization that has made a sustained and significant contribution over a number of years to the Canadian orchestral community, with an emphasis on leadership, education and volunteerism. It was established in 2002 to honour Orchestras Canada\u2019s founding Executive Director. Past winners include distinguished musicians, volunteers, educators, ensembles, and arts managers: a tribute to Mrs. Webster\u2019s inclusive vision for Canadian orchestras.<\/p>\n<p>Maestro N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin is an internationally renowned, proudly Canadian, proudly Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois conductor. \u00a0In September 2018, he became the third Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 2012 and Montreal\u2019s Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain since 2000, he is also Honorary Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (after serving as Music Director, 2008 to 2018), and Honorary Member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. \u00a0In September 2019, he signed a life-time contract with the Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain. \u00a0A Deutsche Grammophon artist, Maestro N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin has a significant and diverse discography.<\/p>\n<p>In response to receiving the award, Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin said: \u201cDear musicians across Canada, I am deeply honoured to receive the Betty Webster Award from Orchestras Canada. The Canadian orchestral scene abounds in talent and, while we are going through a rough patch these days, I am one of those who remain hopeful and believe we must stand together in the coming months. To the entire musical world, to musicians across the country, bravo and thank you for your many initiatives. It warms my heart to receive this honour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The award includes a plaque and a donation to an orchestra of the winner\u2019s choosing. M. N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin has asked that this year\u2019s donation be directed to the <strong>Orchestre symphonique de l\u2019\u00c9cole Joseph-Fran\u00e7ois Perrault.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The national jury was chaired by OC board member and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Director of Artistic Operations,\u00a0<strong>Jennifer MacDonald<\/strong>, and included last year\u2019s laureate,\u00a0<strong>Claire\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Guimond\u00a0<\/strong>(flutist and founder\/long-time artistic director of Arion Orchestre Baroque, Montreal QC);\u00a0<strong>Chris Lee<\/strong>\u00a0(tuba, National Arts Centre Orchestra);\u00a0<strong>Eric Mathis<\/strong>\u00a0(Director of Artistic Administration and trombonist, Symphony Nova Scotia, Halifax NS);\u00a0<strong>Leanne Miners<\/strong>\u00a0(arts manager, North Bay ON); and\u00a0<strong>Jeffrey Ryan<\/strong>\u00a0(composer, Vancouver BC).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the Award, jury chair Jennifer MacDonald noted, \u201cour jury was, as always, inspired by the nominations: people and groups whose contributions are felt regionally, nationally and internationally. It was a genuine privilege to be reminded of the many ways that Canadians are making an impact on the orchestral world. \u00a0Ultimately, though, one particular nomination rose to the top, and we are honoured to name Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin as this year\u2019s winner.
