The\u00a0fall usually marks the beginning of the season in the world of\u00a0performing arts, orchestras included.\u00a0As we approach the end of the 9th\u00a0month of the pandemic, most Canadian orchestras have pivoted into some form of online offering by now, powered by their courage, resilience,\u00a0and deep longing to connecting with their\u00a0beloved\u00a0audiences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Show Must Go On!<\/h3>\n

For the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra<\/a>, it is clear that \u201cThe show must go on\u201d. In fact, this was the opening statement to their new season\u00a0<\/span>announcement, which will feature 5 virtual concerts to take place from October through <\/span>April<\/span>\u00a02021.\u00a0<\/span>In addition to up-close coverage of the musical performances, the \u2018NBYO LIVE\u2019 concerts will go behind-the-scenes for interviews and will offer a real-time Q&A session with the audience.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cMusic has the power to uplift. It\u2019s something that is very important during these challenging times, so we are excited to, once again, bring live orchestral music to the community,\u201d says Ken McLeod, CEO of the NBYO.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Quebec Orchestras Went Fully Digital<\/h3>\n

In Montreal,<\/span>\u00a0Q<\/span>C<\/span>\u00a0which has been a red zone<\/a> for nearly two months now, the OSM (<\/span>Orchestre<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>symphonique<\/span><\/a>\u00a0de Montr\u00e9al)\u00a0<\/span>went fully digital with their \u201cThe OSM like you\u2019ve never seen it before\u201d series of 6 concerts, which opened with a special Halloween performance\u00a0<\/span>for the whole family that was offered free of charge. The series will run through January.\u00a0<\/span>Also<\/span>\u00a0in Montreal, I Musici Chamber Orchestra<\/a> announced a fully virtual season of 6 concerts, which will bring local talent to the forefront<\/span>, and feature varied works from Baroque Masterpieces to\u00a0<\/span>21<\/span>st<\/span>\u00a0century works. The season will run through April.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Trois-Rivi\u00e8res in Quebec, the OSTR (Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivi\u00e8res<\/a>) started the fall season with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>performances in a reduced capacity\u00a0<\/span>venue<\/span>\u00a0as they were still in\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0orange zone<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>With the recent passage of the city to<\/span>\u00a0the red zone, the orchestra quickly adapted and announced a virtual concert<\/span>\u00a0that is available on demand to their audiences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An Inspiring Initiative in Ottawa<\/h3>\n

The Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>spent their fall working to build a national coalition of professional and youth orchestras to create a series of<\/span>\u00a0virtual<\/span>\u00a0workshops and masterclasses available to youth orchestra students across Canada, under the banner of\u00a0<\/span>the Canadian National Masterclass Series<\/span><\/b>.\u00a014 workshops and masterclasses are set to take place between November 23 and January 30, free to OYOA students and to partner youth orchestras, led by some of Canada’s top orchestral musicians.\u00a0<\/span>The first workshop is\u00a0<\/span>an intro to\u00a0<\/span>reed-making<\/span>\u00a0with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Gabriel Azzie, Principal Bassoon for Symphony Nova Scotia<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recordings and On-Demand Videos in MB and BC<\/h3>\n

The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra<\/a> took advantage of\u00a0<\/span>the fact that limited gatherings were permitted in the province (<\/span>up\u00a0<\/span>until November 20, when MB entered the red zone<\/a>), and offered hybrid programming in which 30-40 audience members were permitted.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe got good audio and video recordings [of our fall performances] and will be releasing these online.\u201d, said Vicki Young, the Managing Director of the MCO.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe are researching options for holding a virtual fundraising dinner. We have continued to update and improve our MCO at Home online digital content\u00a0<\/span>hub and<\/span>\u00a0are creating new content and examining the idea of offering podcasts.\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other side of the country, the Victoria Symphony<\/a> in British Columbia decided to publish a pre-recorded concert every 2 weeks for the remainder of their traditional season<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe\u00a0<\/span>orchestra is socially distanced for these performances and we\u2019ve been able to showcase various sections of our orchestra \u2013 strings, brass \u2013 as well as smaller ensembles.<\/span>\u201d, said Jill Smith, Director of Marketing at VS.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Connecting In-Person when Possible<\/h3>\n

In some parts of the country, in-person concerts are still possible with reduced venue capacity. The Fredericton Symphony Orchestra<\/a> in New Brunswick still hope to host their annual Christmas concert in person. Fredericton is a yellow zone<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>at the moment<\/span>, which means that indoor events with up to 50 people are still possible.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
