General Manager of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra

The Ottawa Symphony is pursuing a plan of revitalization. Based on a renewed mission, and underpinned by a new strategic focus and strong fiscal management, the organization is seeking a dynamic arts manager to lead the city\u2019s 55-year orchestra in its next chapter.<\/p>\n

The incumbent will be a self-starter, eager to make a difference in the city\u2019s cultural scene. Ideally, you have experience working in, and managing a performing arts organization, are highly collaborative and a powerful communicator. Most of all, you are keen to increase community connections and relevance for one of Ottawa\u2019s foundational classical music organizations.<\/p>\n

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

GENERAL MANAGER<\/strong>
\nReporting to the President of the Board of Directors, the General Manager (GM) is responsible for managing the human and financial resources of the Orchestra in order to achieve the orchestra’s mission. The GM is responsible for the operational and strategic activities of the organization in the pursuit of objectives, including financial administration and reporting, artistic operations, marketing, and fundraising. Objectives are achieved in collaboration with the Artistic Operations Coordinator, the Marketing & Patron Steward, and orchestra members.<\/p>\n

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Planning
\n\u2022 Assist and participate in the development and implementation of the annual plan for the orchestra that supports the artistic, financial, and community objectives of the organization.<\/p>\n

Governance
\n\u2022 Advise the Board of Directors on matters within the scope of GM responsibilities to promote the efficient operation of the orchestra
\n\u2022 Provide staff and personal support to board initiatives<\/p>\n

Marketing
\n\u2022 Oversee annual marketing budget
\n\u2022 Prioritize activities in alignment with concert and organizational priorities
\n\u2022 Evaluate tactics, report and adjust as necessary
\n\u2022 Ensure best practices and brand standards are applied<\/p>\n

Fund Raising and Development\/External Relations
\n\u2022 Ensure effective communication with the Orchestra\u2019s constituencies
\n\u2022 Work with Board members in fundraising activities, and drive internal activities to steward donors
\n\u2022 Prepare and submit grant applications and reports to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
\n\u2022 Oversee the processing and recording of all donations, sponsorships and grants, produce and file tax receipts and acknowledgements as needed<\/p>\n

Artistic & Event Planning & Production
\nWith staff support:
\n\u2022 Develop an annual plan for orchestra operations, including rehearsal and performance schedules, program themes and ideas, special events, and audience development. Oversee implementation of the plan.
\n\u2022 Negotiate and execute performance and rehearsal agreements and licenses, as required.
\n\u2022 Oversee budgeting, contracting and remuneration of musicians, including timely union remittances (pension and work dues)
\n\u2022 Ensure compliance with the orchestra\u2019s Collective Bargaining Agreement<\/p>\n

Finance
\nWith support from the contract book keeper:
\n\u2022 Ensure that accurate books of accounts are maintained
\n\u2022 Prepare and submit for approval the annual operating budget. Monitor and authorize expenditures in accordance with approved budget; prepare updated projections based on actual income and expense activity.
\n\u2022 Prepare monthly financial statements, including cash flow projections, for Board review and approval.<\/p>\n

General
\n\u2022 Keep abreast of activities and developments in the orchestra field<\/p>\n

Qualifications
\n\u2022 Post-secondary education in arts management, or a discipline pertinent to the job function with relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
\n\u2022 Proficiency in both Official Languages preferred
\n\u2022 Adaptability to changing work hours throughout the year
\n\u2022 An understanding and appreciation of classical music an asset<\/p>\n
